Brett is an ecologist with over 40 years’ experience as a recognised specialist in ecological research and management.

 

Highly strategic with strong leadership and analytical skills, Brett is known for getting results for his clients and cares deeply about solving the problem of ecologically sustainable development. He specialises in development impact assessment and the formulation of environmental management measures. He primarily works for the infrastructure, renewable energy, property development and mining industries with a reputation for applying a professional, scientific approach to respond to regulator requirements and community expectations.

 

He worked initially on threatened species conservation then for six years with the Royal Australasian Ornithologists’ Union (now Birds Australia) on their migratory shorebird program and has held a position with Wetlands International – Asia Pacific, based in Kuala Lumpur. He started work as an ecological consultant to industry in 1980, initially part-time and has held senior and principal consulting positions with a number of companies in Brisbane and Melbourne.

 

Brett is the Managing Director of Nature Advisory (formerly Brett Lane & Associates, which he established in 2001). In addition to his consulting role, he is also a mentor to graduates and young professionals, supporting them to become the best they can to go on and make a difference for the environment.

 

A keen bird watcher he particularly enjoys the amazing natural phenomenon of migrating shorebirds. Brett also plays classical and flamenco guitar in his spare time.

 

He has written two books, Shorebirds in Australia and Birds of Port Phillip Bay. In addition, he has contributed chapters to books and conference proceedings on migratory waterbirds, coastal biodiversity and wetland management.
