Wind farm assessment and planning

Nature Advisory has built Australia’s most experienced and largest team of ecologists to support the investigation and development of wind farm sites in Australia.

We can assist through the provision of trusted advice on key biodiversity issues connected with wind farm sites and how to approach these issues with the regulators (Commonwealth, State and local governments).

At the early stages of site identification and development we are often asked for overview assessment or constraints assessments to identify ecological issues likely to arise in the project planning and assessment processes.

As the development progresses we provide advice and scientific information through:

  • Early discussions on layout opportunities and constraints
  • Implementation of detailed flora, fauna and native vegetation surveys, in accordance with required survey methods (Commonwealth and State), including with interstate partners
  • Assessment for native vegetation removal permits
  • Bird and bat investigations
  • Targeted studies of listed flora and fauna species, or groups of species, as well as listed ecological communities
  • The Nature Advisory Bird Collision Risk Model can predict wind farm impacts on individual species, such as Brolgas and Wedge-tailed Eagles
  • Preparation of EPBC Act Referrals and Assessments
  • Preparation of biodiversity reports to accompany Victorian Environment Effects Statement (EES) and NSW Environmental Impact Statements (EIS)
  • Input to discussions on draft approval conditions at Commonwealth and State levels
  • Development of efficient and cost-effective bird and bat management plans to enable monitoring and mitigation of wind farm impacts on flying wildlife

Specific studies for energy facilities and power lines can include:

  • Native vegetation mapping and assessment
  • Bird utilisation surveys
  • Bat utilisation surveys
  • Targeted survey, Brolga, Parrots, Eagles, listed species
  • Referrals and assessments, EPBC referrals, state assessment
