The Eastern Grey Kangaroo (EGK) is very common and widespread throughout Victoria. However, as the urban interface encroaches on their natural habitat, issues of animal and environment welfare, and public safety need to be addressed. As a proactive approach, property developers in growth areas are required to engage environmental consultants to develop EGK Management Plans.
Nature Advisory has an abundance of experience undertaking EGK assessments. Our dedicated zoological team has conducted EGK surveys across many suburbs in Melbourne’s growth corridors, particularly the north west. In line with DELWP’s EGK survey guidelines, two qualified zoologists from Nature Advisory conduct an overview habitat assessment of the ‘study area’, which includes the development footprint and the surrounding area up to 1 kilometre. Suitable habitat for EGK is commonly found between forests and farmland. Then, two zoologists will undertake four EGK surveys, two at dusk and two at dawn. The surveys include visual searches of the study area, recording observations or evidence of EGK.
The results of the assessment and surveys are used in the preparation of the EGK Management Plan. Threats to EGK in the area are identified and management actions are outlined in response. Typical management strategies include staging the development in a way that encourages EGK to move away from the development site and into areas of suitable habitat. Proper erection of exclusion fencing ensures EGK don’t become ‘landlocked’ permitting them from escaping construction areas.
