BSc in Zoology and Conservation Biology
Andrew Lewis is a Senior Ecologist and Project Manager at Nature Advisory and holds a BSc in Zoology and Conservation Biology from the University of Western Australia (2011) and an MSc in Ecology and Conservation from Uppsala University, Sweden (2015), where his thesis explored roe deer behavioural responses to returning large carnivores, lynx and wolves.
Andrew has a diverse background in ecological consultancy spanning Australia, and the UK, and brings more than 7 years of experience across urban development, renewable energy, and strategic biodiversity planning. A key focus of Andrew’s career has been advancing nature-positive outcomes in urban environments. During five years in London, he specialised in applying Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and ecosystem services thinking to major urban regeneration projects. Most notably, he served as Biodiversity Coordinator for Brent Cross Town, one of Europe’s largest town centre regeneration schemes. Andrew also supported the development of the Old Oak and Park Royal (OPDC) Industrial Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), drafting much of the Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity chapters. OPDC won the 2024 UK Planning Awards Plan-Making prize for this SPD. His work contributed to the design and implementation of multifunctional green infrastructure and nature-based solutions that delivered measurable benefits for both biodiversity and people, including improvements in urban heat mitigation, climate resilience, air and water quality, and public health. His approach emphasises strategic, evidence-based ecological design. Now based in Melbourne, Andrew is continuing this work, including through a collaboration with Nature Based Cities, where he has helped to develop an innovative accreditation scheme and a suite of design guides to assist developers in integrating nature into urban design.
In parallel, Andrew manages ecological assessments for large-scale wind energy projects across New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. His work spans all stages—from managing feasibility studies and field assessments to EPBC Act referrals, impact mitigation, and offset scheme design. He is particularly interested in collaborating with clients who are committed to investing in positive outcomes for nature, whether through mechanisms like the Nature Repair Market or via innovative ecological mitigation measures.
Andrew is also leading Nature Advisory’s technical capabilities and service offerings to support the emerging ‘Nature Positive’ agenda, and to help industries move beyond compliance toward more sustainable and meaningful ecological outcomes.
Prior to Nature Advisory, Andrew spent two years at Temple Group in London, where he progressed from Senior to Principal Ecologist. There, he led ecological impact assessments for major urban regeneration projects, acted as technical lead on Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, and helped develop services in ecosystem services and natural capital assessment. Prior to that, Andrew spent nearly four years at The Ecology Consultancy, London, managing a wide range of projects and advising on compliance with protected species and habitat regulations.
